Spirit of Giving helps us make a difference during holidays and beyond

Since 1984, the Gazette has featured its “Spirit of Giving” section so that readers can make a difference in their respective communities during the holiday season. The listings below include both seasonal and year-round opportunities to offer vital help and compassion to those in need.

Whether you are providing gifts of time, money, or goods, your heart knows you are doing something wonderful for those who need it most. It’s a busy time of year, but never too busy to be a good friend to others.

The office of 1st Ward Alderman Proco Joe Moreno, 2740 W. North Ave., (773) 278-0101, www.ward1.org/, will direct those in need to the appropriate organizations and City service departments. If you would like to help, the office will provide a list of organizations needing donations or volunteers.

The office of 3rd Ward Alderman Pat Dowell, 5046 S. State St., will direct those in need to appropriate organizations and City service departments. The office of 11th Ward Alderman Patrick D. Thompson, 3659 S. Halsted St., (773) 254-6677, www.11thward.com, will direct volunteers and recipients to appropriate organizations and agencies. Call the office for details.

The office of 25th Ward Alderman Danny Solis, 1645 S. Blue Island Ave., (773) 523-4100, www.Ward25.com, will direct those in need of assistance to appropriate organizations and City services.

The office of 27th Ward Alderman Walter Burnett, 4 N. Western Ave., 1C, (312) 432-1995, www.aldermanburnett.com/, runs a coat drive throughout the year. Call the office if a coat is being offered or needed. This office also works with other organizations to distribute coats. Open Mon. through Fri., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sat., 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The office of 42nd Ward Alderman Brendan Reilly, 325 W. Huron St., Suite 510, (312) 642-4242, www.ward42chicago.com, will direct those in need to appropriate organizations and City services.

Casa Central seeks volunteers to work with participants of all ages and support its programs to help transform lives through tutoring and mentoring youth, spending time with older adults at Casa Central’s adult wellness center, and helping maintain a clothing boutique for families experiencing homelessness.
